Puppies and Babies

There are similarities, and a few big differences (other than the obvious ‘people’ vs. ‘animal’ one)…

Here are a few similarities I’ve noted in the past two weeks of new puppy ownership:

  • They’re cute.
  • They’re exhausting.
  • They have a schedule and I’m stuck with it.
  • I can’t get nearly everything done.
  • They can only entertain themselves for a short time.  Otherwise, it’s me.
  • They wake up early.
  • They make messes.
  • Their toys are expensive.

Some differences?

  • Puppy teeth:  ouch!
  • Puppies are housebroken much more quickly than children are potty trained.
  • Vet shots don’t hurt.

The really big difference?

  • I can put the puppy in his crate and leave him there for awhile!

When Life is Too Busy,

a puppy is the answer!

Here’s the thing I love about adding something big–like a puppy or a new job or spanish lessons–to our lives: our priorities become pretty clear, pretty fast.

There’s no way I could have looked at my calendar and thought, “Hey, look at all this free time. Let’s get a pup.” There were no extra minutes, much less hours, for feeding and housebreaking and training. But, amazing, there they are. We find the minutes for what matters, don’t you think? And our new little pup, Finn, is right up there on our list.
Other than the obvious (I hope!) “kids,” what’s on yours?
